Dr. Van is an artist, musician and videographer based in Oklahoma City. His sound is industrialized chaos mixed with provocative maximalism that features sounds of barking dogs, clanking pipes, and actual outer space (really). As a producer, Dr. Van is inspired by bass-heavy experimental artists that utilize sample-based production such as Two Fingers, Ivy Lab and older drum-and-bass pioneers like Roni Size, Luke Vibert and Aphex Twin.
He wants his creations to be “a bit disruptive” while also maintaining a rhythmic sense that he honed in over the years he spent playing as a hip-hop-influenced jazz drummer in projects inspired by Medeski, Martin & Wood, John Scofield and the Bad Plus.
During a live DJ set, Dr. Van approaches laptop experimentation with the same level of enthusiasm he might have taken to the drumset in a different time.
“My music is so loud it immediately punches… That's exactly what I want.”
